WOI is a spin-off from University of Florida, located at Gainesville, FL. It was founded in 2008 by Dr. Huikai Xie, the principal inventor of large-scan-range MEMS mirrors/lenses and miniature optical imaging probes for confocal imaging, OCT, full-field OCT and nonlinear optical imaging.
With the innovation and superiority in MEMS scanning optical devices, WOI emerged as the first company in the world to bring MEMS to conventional endoscopy technology and pioneers a new paradigm for medical imaging.
Every year in the US, about 1.3M biopsies are performed based on a preliminary cancer determination. About 1M of these biopsies will require open surgery under anesthesia. Only about 15% of the surgeries will result in a cancer diagnosis – alternatively 85% of these biopsies will be unnecessary if the physicians would have been able to accurately identify cancer during the preliminary examination. In addition, nearly 20M breast biopsies are preformed world-wide each year with about the same proportion of negative results.
WOI’s approach is to enter the optical imaging market with a system used in conjunction with existing endoscopic products. WOI probes and software extend the existing capabilities of endoscopes to encompass cellular level observation. WOI systems will utilize endoscopes’ biopsy channels without any modifications, allowing for a smooth transition to an expanded diagnostic capability.
Our platform systems can be sold to more than 20,000 hospitals and clinics that have cancer treatment and diagnostic facilities. Meanwhile WOI probes will be affordable for one-time use. WOI product platform is anticipated to extend into the area of vascular imaging and surgery as well as in the veterinary medicine market.
